The select few use them to gain traffic and exposure to their websites. Most use them to share things with friends or keep in touch with each other. As the web becomes one big party there are more and more social bookmarking sites springing up every single day.
They are there just for their own amusement which means they will rarely buy or do anything. What most of them do not realize is the visitors coming from these social bookmarking websites are not really interested in anything commercial they have to offer. They realize they can gain plenty of visitors and get good exposure for free by utilizing the phenomenon. This is where online marketers see the potential. The mere mention of a websites can direct thousands of visitors to it in a relatively short amount of time, such as digg, when such a website has thousand of users. It is a site where members can share links or web pages with each other. What is a social bookmarking site?
They visit out of curiosity. Users are not actively looking to participate in any topic in particular. There is no relevancy. This is where social bookmarking fails. However the amount of relevant traffic is important. The amount of traffic coming to a website does not matter. This fact has been proven time and time again by several reputable people.
It does not provide any worth from a marketing stand point and should not be exploited for those purposes. Marketers need to realize social bookmarking should be left to the sociable.
